I got the desk/cabinet completed for my daughter. It was made from salvaged chestnut boards that were warped and heavily eaten by powder post beetles. First I had to treat the wood for the beetles, then make the top with the best boards, make the cabinet with the shorter pieces, then the shelves with what was left. The drawer has full extension slides. It took two weeks to make . The time was spent treating the wood, building the top, treating the top with "wood hardener" to give it a solid top, finishing then making the cabinet and lastly the shelves. The top was eight feet by 2 feet and made up of four full length boards and one spliced board. The top had to be trimmed to fit the wall, The house is over 140 years old and the walls were not square to put it mildly. There will be a supporting apron added to the desk later since it had to be recut.
