No, not some kind of new elixer.

Normally when I use one of my hole saws I end up prying the piece out or pounding a small punch through the top of the saw thing, in both cases ending up with some damage to the work. I've been careful to cut just to the point where the pilot drill exits the work, then turn over to finish the cut but invariably it's a real chore getting the work out of the saw without at least a little damage to it.

In on-off situations that's not such a big deal however ... I'm planning on making up a bunch of spin top blanks to turn for the Toys for Tots donation our club does every year. meaning I'll have lots to do so production is an issue. Thus the question:

What technique do you use to easily extract the work from the inside of a hole saw?

Dennis,
I have always had the same problem you are having.
Does it make sense to turn a long cylinder on your lathe and just part off the pieces you need?
I have done that successfully a number of times. Part them almost all the way through, then cut them off on the band saw. A quick trip through the belt sander and they are finished.

GREAT idea, Zulu.

Plus I can bore a center hole at the same time on the lathe to ensure proper centering of the dowel that's used for the handle and tip on the opposite side.

No wonder you make the big bucks!! (grin)

Thanks.

DENNIS S: I saw the title and wondered if you were taking me up on the everclear

If you add a sacrificial layer atop your work piece for the first blank, you then can re-use that sacrificial blank atop all the subsequent blanks you make. The guide bore hole will always line up and if you chose to you could rough the sacrificial blank slightly smaller to help with the friction. A 1/8 --1/4 inch scrap of plywood would be a candidate for the throw away piece. Banging and wedging and punching the sacrificial shouldn't be a problem then to remove the blanks as they are completed .

I have a question to go with the situation. Can the hole saw bit be sprayed with some type of lube to make the blank removal easier? If so what would the lube be, something like wax or a tool spray?

Now there's thought, NT. I use Pam cooking spray on my bandsaw blade when I have some a lot of sawing or heavy cuts to make. That might work!

I'm also wondering if there are hole saw blades and then there are .. hole saw blades. Meaning perhaps the low end HSB's may have insufficient set in the teeth to allow the work piece easily removable.

I think spraying the hole saw with WD40 or a light oil would help with "plug" removal.
Also, I usually drill the hole saw about 1/2 way through and then flip the board over and chase the center hole back stopping as soon a break out occurs. Leaving a bit sticking out to grip with my fingers. You may have to extend the center bit a little more to get it all the way through.
