My parents lost a few trees to Hurricane Sandy and it would be nice to get them milled instead of throwing them in a landfill. There are a couple of oaks and a hickory. Second best would be firewood, I suppose.

Does anyone know a portable sawmill in or near the Manassas, VA area?

TIM Y.: Just in case there aren't any close by that members can mention, you could GOOGLE portable sawmills and question the manufacturers about close by customers of theirs. Many times the mfg will have a referal source available.
Sorry for the loss of fine old trees, and hoping that the old friends can be remembered with new trees to grow old with.

Used to be a guy out in Gainsville (or Leesburg?) ... memory is short.

Edit to add:
Google shows this guy:

I have not used, nor do I know him.

I have purchased wood from these guys at the Troy,VA location. Don't know anything about the Manassas site. They might be interested or know someone local that can help.

Even if you find one, he may not want to cut "yard" trees because of the potential for metal in the wood. If he runs into a nail or other metal it would likely ruin his blade, which could cost you a hundred or so to replace.

Depending on the location, and age of the trees he should be alright.
40 years ago Manassas was still pretty much country.

And the metal would be lead Minie Balls. Easy to cut through.
:D

My portable sawmill guy said they only cost around $40. Last tree I had milled, he hit a nail, but didn't charge me for it. Plus he called me up to write him a check for less after he realized he overcharged me. Real good guy.

There's a lot of variation in price depending on size, etc. A Timberwolf 25' 2 inch blade runs about $75.
