Well, I decided to get off my butt and make a tutorial on the latest series of boxes I am making.

These boxes are easy to make, look great, and have a huge margin for error!

First, pick out the piece of wood you want to use. These boxes are 9x13 which is not the "golden mean" ration, but they are built on the ratio of the square root of 2 = 1.41414 (approx)

The wood should be 4 quarter, which means it should be, but won't be one inch thick. closer to 3/4" is what you get, if you are lucky, you do get very close to one inch, but that is soooooooo rare.

I picked this nice piece of walnut that I already used for one box. Mark of the length. for this size you want 45", the sides will be 44" but you have 3 x 1/8 kerfs, and a little left over to be safe

Then cut to length. I used my new Kapex

Next, rip to the size in height that you want, this was alread 2 1/2 so it worked out well.

Since we are going to cut a bevel on the sides of the box, we do not have the need to use the band saw to resaw it to width, nor the planer. (saves us from making some errors)

now it's time to cut the grove (dado) for the bottom. I use 1/8 walnut ply for all the bottoms of my boxes, very easy.

After the groove has been cut, turn the piece over and mark out the sides. I like to make 3 sides "flow" so I usually start from the left hand side of the wood and mark off the left side of the box. That way the front has two "flowing" sides.

DON'T FORGET !!! now is the time to sand the inside of the box. Do it now before you cut the miters because if you sand after you cut the miters, you may mess up the corners, But as a matter of fact, in this box it doesn't matter because they will be covered, but it's a good habit to get into

Now cut the sides to length, making sure you get the right sizes so the box will be square !!

Now cut the miters. Since I got the Kapex, it's a joy to do it. I used to do it on the table saw and it was a pain !

How is this for a tight miter joint ????????????

but not bad !

Size up the bottom of the box

Now we are ready to glue it up!

I hope to get more pics and info next week.
