As I mentioned in a previous post, my friends at
Hardwood Lumber and More had a woodworking show this weekend. There were some very skilled craftsmen there demonstrating there skills.
The two that impressed me the most were
Scott McPherson aka "The Mad Luthier" and Jeff Volmer.
Scott has been in the stringed instrument repair business for many years and has recently started a side business of intrument construction. He specializes in violins, violas, and related instruments. He had some gorgeous examples of his work with him including one flame maple-veneered viola that was simply breathtaking!
Jeff Volmer, one of the nation's leading authorities on bandsaw puzzle box making, was there as well. He was doing simple puzzleboxes as demonstrations but had some of his more complex work with him to show the possibilities. He had one jewelry box made out of a large burl (maple I think) that had drawers that could snake in and out and round about. If you ever get a chance to see this guy in action, it is well worth the trip! He offers classes out of his home in Cincinnati as well as at Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Indiana.
