This past week I was making hinges for the wings and struts. I used wire coat hangers bent for the different parts of the hinge. The mounting plate was cut to size aluminum sheet, which will be screwed down to the wing spars. I needed to make a small hump in the middle of the mounting plate to accommodate the hinge pin. To form the humps I took 2 small blocks of maple, routed a small V grove in one and the other a bit larger grove, placing a nail in the small grove and a cut mounting plate on top then placed the larger V grove block over the metal and nail , smacked with a mallet and presto I have the required hump. The loops and curves in the wire hinge will be for strut attachments and guy wires, the hinges will be the top and bottom of the struts so the wing will twist, or what the Wrights call wing warping. Next week I will cut and mount the struts.
