I am making a cupola for my roof and the base needs to be at an angle the base must be stable because the rest of it is built on the base.

So how do I make the joint on the compound angle strong?

Since you won't be up close to it once installed, I'd use 2 1/2" coated exterior screws and maybe some inside corner blocks.

Do you mean the angle connection where the cupola fits over the ridge of the roof? If so, I like splines or heavy pocket screws, and corner braces at the corners.

Daddy -

Can you post some kind of sketch to illustrate the problem? I'm not understanding why you have a compound miter at the base of the cupola.

Daddy Gloves.
Look HERE for how Turnpike is strengthening his trusses using plywood gussets. I think something like this should work for you too.

Dennis:

Think picture frame, a square frame but the boards are tipped at a 15* angle.

Oh! I got it, Daddy. I was picturing a cupola with sides parallel to the ridge of the roof. I gather yours is square or at least rectangular but is rotated 45degrees in relation to the building.
