Ever since I got my shop marginally operational I've been fighting the DC arrangement around the disk/belt sander and the bandsaw. I finally tore out everything and re-piped it in a quasi permanent install:

Sorry I didn't clean the mess up before I took the pics. I was just so ecstatic about finally solving this problem.

Since I went the cheap using standard HVAC ductwork I realized I was losing a good deal of the efficiency of the DC due to all the adjustable elbows and poorly sealed fittings.

So ...

I snooped around for ways to seal ductwork and found this mastic sorta stuff about as thick as yogurt. You wrap the fittings with a 'scrim' (I used fiberglass drywall tape) and daub the stuff on. I can assure you that it may be a bit more bother, once it's done it's infinitely neater and more permanent than duct tape. At least in my experience.

I've got most of the lower stuff sealed now and already I can see a difference in the amount of material pickup at each machine.

That's great news Dennis !!!

Just 3 questions:

1) What type of dust collector do you have?

2) What was the name or manufacturer of the mastic stuff?

3) Where did you get it?

Thanks in advance,

Skyrider (who hopes to be installing a DC real soon)

Hey Dennis,

Glad to hear that you found a solution. I think that you need to post a new photo though, this one's not very convincing. :D

Tom

Hummmm......the infamous "red x" photo....not very convincing, Dennis

Your solution sounds like a great idea.

See "Duct mastic"

There are other brands of the stuff available, one of the more popular is Hardcast. Google search will turn up info. I got this stuff at a local HVAC shop. $25 for that gallon bucket but it goes a long, long way. I've only used a small portion to complete what you see in the photo and at the table saw, jointer and drum sander locations.

The down side (and there always is one) is that the mastic alone doesn't reinforce the joints like duct tape would. You really need to use some sort of scrim. The piping should be well secured to prevent any movement. The plus is that it may be a bit messier to work with than duct tape but it's pretty much permanent when cured out and looks a lot better than any duct tape application I've ever been able to produce.

Is this any better, Tom (grin)

Yes, Dennis the last one did.....the first one didn't!!!

But, I sure am envious of your bandsaw  It still makes two of both of mine :D :D

Thanks for the pics, Dennis--I know it's hard on dial-up.
