Well I have one side of my shop cleaned after 3 weeks.
What I am going to do now is get it straight and put up some cabinets and a plane till and clamp holding station.

I know some of you have plane tills, so could you help me with some plans?
I have 4 planes and two block planes.

Also on another note, I have a Stanly #55 plane that I am thinking about
selling, I am looking for a site I can get an estimate for the plane. I am
not going to use it, so no need to keep it and let it collect dust. I have
the original manual for it and all the parts.

About as simple as you can get, but I allowed enough room to add a few more with a little rearranging - if I ever get more.

Great project, Yank. You'll enjoy it.
Here's the one I did last year and I've improved on it since (maybe get picks later today of upgrade):

Not real purty but very functional.
good luck,

What else - Margaritas :D . Actually it's not there anymore. I finally junked it along with several other small kitchen appliances that my wife had replaced in the last 10 years or so. I'm a pack rat by nature, and thought I might be able to use it/them for something someday - no idea what.

My needs are a little different than yours due to the quantity of planes I've acquired. It's a little cluttered at the moment, but here it is:

I took quite a few ideas from Chris Becksvoort, Dave Anderson (of Chester Toolworks), Andy Rae and the great folks on Woodnet. Check there for a similar thread full of great ideas.

I wanted an enclosed cabinet to keep the dust off things. I also wanted additional storage for little used items and extras.

You'll see that the two panels are hinged to allow access below for these. Admittedly, you'll have to set your purse down to lift the panel with two #7s, a #6, and two #5s on it. :D The panels are angled to allow gravity to keep the tools from falling out. I don't in earthquake country so I feel safe as they are.

The cubbies are great and and due to the depth of the cabinet I can just fit two #3s into a single cubbie (if necessary ;) ).

Both the panels and the cubbies are lined with sheet cork to protect the irons.

The hinges on the doors swing flush with the sides of the cabinet.

I admit that I may have too many planes.

Hey Wayne,

Here's some pics of mine. It's pretty simple. I decided to hang it on French Cleats, that are very useful all around the shop.
Image

Originally, I thought to add some multi-pane glassed doors, but I was talked out of it with the argument that opening and closing the doors would be a pain when I needed a plane while working.
Image

The paint is is ordinary milk paint. The inside is ordinary orange shellac, the wood is cheap pine.

Good luck,
Tom

Thank you all for the help and pics. I am sure I can come up with a nice plane till using your suggestions and pics.

WOW some really great tills here. I'd love to build one myself but due to haveing almost no wall space available and taking my shop with me back and forth to WY, I've gone with individual cradles for mine.
Image
By lining the bottom with adheasive backed magnet sheets, it really holds the plane to the cradle.
Image

Combine this with a white pegboard wall, and I have a till that still allows me to carry my planes with sole protection.
Image

Well, it works for me anyway.

I'm watching this post with great interest as well-- I've seen Don's till, and it is even more impressive in person.

I'm going to wait until my plane "collection" settles down a bit before I lock myself into a till. I haven't posted gloats on them but my "family" has grown quite a bit as of late- even to the point that I am selling a couple (an 8c type 9, and the 24 inch wooden trying plane) on ebay right now. Once they settle down a bit I plan to make a till myself (or make one that is adjustable perhaps to accomodate different sized planes?)

OK; after two days of cleaning 5 planes, I was able to find out what I really had.
Millers Falls,,,,,, #9
Stanley,,,,,,,,,,, # 4
Bailey,,,,,,,,,,,, #6
A Craftsman,,,, no number on that one so I have no idea.
and a cheap India made block plane, which will be replaced very soon.

I flattened all the soles, cleaned and even had to repaint a couple.
All the irons were cleaned of rust; (as much as I could get off, and with an
earlier post on electrolosis, I will finish getting the rest of the rust off).
I got all the irons sharpened and when put back together, took them for a
test ride. They worked great. Before I put them up, I put a coat of paste
wax on them to keep them in shape.

This weekend, I am going to start on plans for a till, after assessing my
needs and size.

Again thanks for the help and guidance.

Wayne

I made this last year to store all of my hand tools. Red Elm and walnut. I turned the drawer knobs out of spalted maple, and the door knobs out of rosewood.
