Hi All,

I'd like to build a box with a table top for a pontoon boat. The box will be removeable and hold fishing things. The plan was to use plywood and cover everything except the top with marine grade carpeting. The top will be teak and have a couple cup holders.

Can anyone tell me what I can put on the ply to preotect it from the elements.

Mike

How about using marine grade ply? http://marine-plywood.us/ , and others.

Cetol is the best I've used for the marine environment.

Painting the wood with a non-viscous epoxy like system three clear coat, and then protecting the epoxy from sunlight with a good marine varnish is about as protective as you can make it while it still looks like wood.

What are the fishing "things"? Are they wet, too? I'd opt for marine grade plywood as previously suggested. There is nothing that will last forever but I think marine plywood will go further than other wood options.

Why not just build the whole thing out of teak?

at the risk of straying from "wood" have you considered the trex type wood/plastic woods? They cut with ww'ing tools and are waterproof. I've seen some trex/teak boat accessories somewhere (I can't remember) and they were awfully snazzy

I have yet to see any Trex sheet goods though, so you'd have to do some sort of a lap joint and seal them to make it waterproof. Widest thing I've seen is a 1X12

Hey, thanks for the replies. Gene, how'd I know you'd be the first to jump in with the logical answer? :D

I wanted to use regular ply because I have a lot on hand. Also, I always thoght marine grade was pretty expensive. I guess that isn't tru...
