I do most of my work in a 7 x 7 "shop" attached to the back wall of our one-car garage. When I need to use my "big" tools (planer, jointer, table saw) I move the car out and set up the tools. The condition LOML has set is that the car has to go back into the garage when I'm done. A few days ago I pulled out my planer and lugged it into the garage. It's pretty heavy and I figure it's only a matter of time before picking it up is going to get harder. I started looking around the garage for a likely storage spot and saw this cabinet:

It's now been replaced by this new planer stand:

I used the FWW plan and modified it to fit my planer and our garage. If you look at the front left wheel you will see that I had to inset it so that the table would clear a drain pipe against the wall and sit flush with the wall. LOML is so pleased with it that she is painting it as I write this.

This was my first time working with "good" plywood. As usual I learned a lot and covered up a few "design changes". Still have to build the drawer for it.

Good job and great planning! :-D
My work space is also attached to the back of a one car garage, however it measures 15' x 20'. I also move my tools into the garage for use, that is why they are all on wheels. I have a standard garage door beween the two and can move the car, lift up the door and roll my table saw, router table and my work bench out to the garage and keep most of the saw dust and router shavings out of my shop. It is alot easier to sweep and vacuum the open floor in the garage than in my cluttered shop.

Great idea, PK. You got me thinking on how I can better arrange storage for my planer as well.

very cool... could we see how you flip it over to make it accessable? I'd love to see the mechanism

Nice job

I'll post a picture once it comes out of the paint shop. Basically, you route a groove into each side of the cabinet. On the tabletop you drill a hole and epoxy in a 3/8" x 2" steel rod. Then it just flips over. I'm going to use barrel bolts to lock it in place. I've seen comments by some people who built this that securing the top when the planer is up is the toughest part. The barrel bolts might have a little play between the bolt and the keeper. If they don't work I was thinking about using some kind of wedge and bracket that would allow me to get it really tight.

Nice work PK! Small shops seem to be the mother of invention.

I just don't understand women and their car got to be in the garage thing. Cars and trucks were designed to be out of doors. Tools need to be indoors. kick the car out and move the tools in.

As you probably know I live in Alaska and my cars and trucks live outside year round. I just don't see how women can be so cruel.
