This is a tissue box cover I made for the podium at church. Couldn't stand looking at that naked box of Kleenex anymore. The top and inlay are canary wood. I'm not sure what the dark wood is. It was a scrap from an abandoned project.

Looks great. That should earn you a blessing of some kind. The canary wood is a nice accent.

Nice!

Does the box go over the tissue box or is there a lid that opens on the wooden box?

I like it. I, too, would get really tired of looking at a box of Kleenex.....when I could be enjoying looking at a stylish wooden box :D :D

That looks like you carved it out a solid block of wood. Yet there's no end grain, at least it appears so to me. I'd really like to see how you achieved such a marvelous grain presentation!

I've made precious few pieces with canary wood but I find it incredibly attractive. Your box proves the point.

at first glance, that seems like a very nice, box....

upon further investigation, there appears to be quite a bit of high-level craftsmanship (bevel top, as Dennis pointed out- wrap around grain, grain orientation in general)

...and that's not to mention that the shavings that are coming out of the top look tissue thin! ;)

Seriously though, very nice piece. The only negative I can see is that if there are any woodworkers in your congregation their minds may drift away from the sermon looking at it!

Nice looking box. Maybe you'll get some orders for more. As the others, I am curious on how you did the corners.

Beautiful work - I agree with the others - the seamless presentation is
very appealing and I'm curious as to how you accomplished it.

Thanks for the compliments.
This is actually a 4 sided box with a top. It just sits on the table with the Kleenex box up against the top. The canary wood around the box is actually and inlay. It started with a piece of wood with a dado in it. I cut a piece to fit and then ran it through the planner to get everything flat. I made the cuts on the table saw and the corners are simply mitered. I then found a nice piece of figured canary wood for the top. Cut it to size and used a raised panel bit with the back cutter removed to get the top with a slight drop to it. Or should I say raised ? I used a forsner bit and a lot of chisel and file to make the slot on top. After gluing up the top I used a 1/8 round over bit on the top and just nicked the sides.
Then sand, sand, sand , sand, and then a simple tung oil finish.
I find that the canary wood is gorgeous. The only thing I dislike is that, at least the stuff I have, has a lot of stress in it and you have to really be careful when cutting

The way you made the corners so clean, invisible to the eye makes the piece for me. Nice choice of wood and neatly done.
