As ya'll know, I've been working on veneering door panels for the kitchen cabinets. Yesterday afternoon I'd just jointed, taped and began the glue-up of the last sheet, 33"tall x 42" wide. (Two doors out of this sheet). Just got the vacuum frame sucked down nice and tidy when the power goes out!

Frantically I drag the generator from the garage out to the shop, get 'er cranked up and ran an extension chord to the vacuum pump. Savaged the project, I hope. Left the generator powering the vacuum pump for 1 1/2hours then had to plug it into the gentrans for emergency power in the house. Power was out from 3:00pm until well after midnight when I turned off the generator and went to bed.

Talk about a heart stopping situation.

Appears to be OK, Verna. I was away from the shop all day today so didn't get a chance to look it over until this evening. The panel hasn't warped but there's a little lifting of the edges of the veneer at each seam. This 'seems' to be consistent with previous work.

What the whole experience taught me is how much we depend on and take for granted something like electricity.

whew-- glad all worked out. You need to keep a hand pump close by in case that happens again ;)

You're right about the "taking utility for granted" thing. We lost water for a few days a while back and it's amazing how much it means to be able to turn a tap.

Turning a tap is not what I miss when the power, and thus my pump is out. It's pushing the lever. We Keep five flushes worth in containers in the basement, as it is a fairly regular thing where power lines are brushed poorly.

Let 'em drink beer.

Glad your veneer was saved. I can just picture you throwing it across the shop if you hadn't caught it in time. ;)

Power and water outages are a regular occurance around here. Old pipes that suffer the weak link syndrome, and of course lightning, etc.

I have a driveway alarm that goes off whenever there's a storm and a nearby lightning strike. EMP I guess.

The guys who work the outages are pretty good tho, so utility outages rarely last more than 3 or 4 hours. :-D

Nothing like working under pressure!

At least you had the emergency power back up. The closest thing to a generator I have is my truck.
