Part of this gloat is Lawrence's fault! :D
Last week I cut the dados in the sideboard pieces. the front frame is african mahogany with openings for the drawers and doors. The sides and back are african mahogany frame with 1/2" (african mahogany) ply fields. Making the dados match up on 22 joints is a bit tedious for someone with as many senior moments as I enjoy .... so .... I got these: LN # 98 & 99 Side Rabbet Planes

And ... then Lawrence came to town the next day and I HAD to go back ... so ... I decided to make sure I had EVERYTHING I needed and bought the HNT Gordon 1/2" rabbet plane. Love that little plane. It is ideal for HARD woods.
Result is that the cabinet went together perfectly.

Yep, you can have only so many witness marks before they get confusing. If you're going to assemble all at once, they almost have to be interchangeable. That's for the machine types, not the hand toolers.

I've got LV side rabbets, and their detail Rabbet planes for dado modification, using them only at the final fitting. Takes a lot of will power to keep from tuning all the pieces at once, but I've found it to be too time consuming, as it is often unnecessary. My mallet gets as much time as they do.

Thanks, Frank. Yes, NB, those little side rabbet planes and the shoulder plane saved me, at east, a week on this project. At first I though that one small rabbet plane would be enough but on closer inspection I realized the alternating grain in the african mahogany would be a mess if I went against it. Getting to where I hate to post a gloat ... because gloating has always been a detestable trait IMHO. But here I hope to convey that having the right tool can make a big difference. Most of the tools I have (and the gloats I've posted) have been attained out of necessity ... as well as desire. I know most of the folks here love using fine tools as much as I do and the 'gloats' posted by others has really helped me overcome a reluctance to get the right tool for the job.
thanks for commenting.

Hey Don,

Nice score! I'm glad to see that someone else appreciates the HTN Gordon planes. I have a set of his rabbet planes. They are works of art that are joy to use, and a great value for the money.

I can attest that they are some awfully pretty planes-- I was lucky to escape the store only slightly lighter in the wallet (veritas dovetail saw) but it is an awfully tempting place to be. I think Karen is concerned that I'm already planning our next trip to the craftsman studio :)

You suck!

Lawrence
