A nice cool rainy weekend in Aurora, so I planned to spend most of it on the work bench. In the first photo you can see the bench I'm replacing. I built that as a chop saw extension when I framed the garage, I mean shop.

Here are the top rails for the sides, glued them up last weekend. They are ash as are the legs. 3"x4-3/4"x32", pretty heavy after handling them all day.

These are photos of the days effort which produced the mortice and tennon for the top rail.

I used the band saw to cut out the center. I chisseled one clean, softened the corners on the tennons, and it's very close to fitting. I was so exceited I had to stop and catch my breath. I was getting hungry and tired, best thing to do was stop before I goofed something up. At this point I can't just whip up another leg, ever hear of a three legged bench? Tomorrow I'll clean the other three and fit everything up.

Here is the machine that's doing all the hard work. I only use it once in a while, but it's been a big help on this project. I think I'll keep it.

Thanks for looking, and as always comments welcome.

The pieces are just stunning. you will be glad you took the pictures because no one will ever see all that art work once she is assembled.

Looks like a heck of a good start. 8) That bench is going to be stout!! Good job so far. :-D
Wish I would have had a machine like that when I did my rocker. Sure would have helped in some places but, so meny were in angled and wierd places, I'm not sure it would have worked everywhere. I drilled and chiseled most of the larger M&Ts and used a router and jig on smaller ones.

Based on the legs we wouldn't call it a bench down here. Here it would be called a hurricane shelter. That thing looks serious.
