Lower section nearly complete, except drawers and finishing. Starting on the upper section in the next day or so. It's basically the same, except slightly smaller.

Note that when applying molding (bottom pieces) to the sides , I only glued and nailed the forward few inches (about 5" ), leaving the back end loose ( I'll fill in the dimple from the set finish nails later ). This forces wood movement to the back of the chest and eliminates the cross grain problems I would have if the entire length were glued/ fastened. Pick reasonably straight grain wood for the molding to avoid it bowing away from the side.

The fluted corner moldings make it for me.

What kind of drawer fronts are you looking at? Just flat? A bead detail?

The corner moldings will be carried thru to the next 2 stories also. Drawer fronts: They will be a flush fit with an edge bead. Considering book matching (probably), with some decorative routing to simulate separate T&G boards(maybe), although this would possibly interrupt the bookmatch too much. I'm going to try a couple different arrangements on a test face first to see if it works visually.

Good thing I have a furniture dolly. This thing will weigh a ton with all the drawers in it. Just the bottom section I hauled into the garage today to give me some working room in the shop, weighs 75 lbs or more.

Walnut is the primary, using cherry for secondary wood.

That is odd!!! Here, cherry is more expensive than walnut!
If I were building something like that, I might use red oak as a secondary wood and worry and sew over using walnut OR cherry as a primary wood!?!?!?!?

Rog[/quote] Actually, the cherry (courtesy of Yanks buddy in 'bama ) was cheaper than the walnut. Also cheaper than construction lumber at our local big box. :-D

I've also used some of my homegrown soft maple for things like drawer glides, etc., and may use it for drawer boxes or back boards although I don't trust the stability of it (still kinda green).
