This is a tip from Woodworkers Journal I received that I wanted to pass along to the WWA. It is about installing undersized plywood shelves in a rabbet.

Start by installing a dado blade in your table saw. Stack it to a cutting width that's narrower than the shelving plywood is thick—5/8" works well (see Photo 1). There's no need for shims with this joint. You'll adjust the thickness of the rabbet's tongue to fit the dado.

I don't think this would buy me anything personally. First, my dado set cuts undersized anyway, I have to shim to get 5/8" or 3/4". Second, I would rather take the extra time to shim to match with multiple test cuts until satisfied and keep it a one step process. Two steps for me is two chances to bung it up.

Thanks for the link though, it is still a great tip to keep in the hip pocket.

Hey Rick,

The advantage is the same as that given by a shoulder on a tennon. The shoulder of the rabbet hides the joint, so if there is any irregularity, it's under the overlap.

Small torn grain on the uprights will be hidden, but the same on the shelves won't. More likely to see the surface of a shelf than the side, so it's push/pull.
