I started building this thing a while ago and have asked lots of questions here about jointing the boards and planing them. Well the top is glued up and now I need to sand it down and put on the bread board ends. That will be next week. The size is 90" long and 41" wide and 1.75 " thick....very heavy....too heavy for one person to handle which is why it is taking me so long to finish.

Now, that is one impressive table top! You must have alot of people at dinner time! :) And that is a good thing, you will need alot of people to move that table into the dinning room!
I don't have a room in my house that would handle anything that big and still seat that meny people at once.
I cant wait to see the base and legs on it.
Keep us posted as you go along. 8)

That's an amazing table top. I don't think it would fit in my shop! What kind of wood are you using - it looks a bit like ash in the photo? What was your method of flattening after the glue up? I'm looking forward to more pictures of your progress. Keep up the great work.

Tom

Ya know, while that seems big, it would really provide the perfect setting for a nice group of folks to share a big Thanksgiving Day spread.

Plenty of room for platters and place settings. My kinda table.

It's looking very nice.

Break out the knickers, puffy shirt and the #7 and get to work.

:D

THAT IS MASSIVE! Don't think that'd fit in my living room, much less my shop.

Beauty work though and I can't wait to see it finished. 8)

the wood is red oak. We measured it yesterday before we cut it to size. At 90 inches 3 can sit on each side comfortably so it really is a table for 8. At 100 inches it is too big for 3 and too small for 4 per side. After glueing them all together I am just flattening them by hand. Plane then sand then plane then sand. The legs are going to be 4x4 or bigger. I will post pics as I get them going.

Very impressive work, Farrell. Just squaring up long thick timbers like that is a challange but gluing them up poses it's own issues. Looks like you've done an outstanding job.

What do you have planned for the base?

And, I hope you'll include a thin, deep drawer for the head of the table. Traditionally it was used to store carving knives and serving utencils.

Congrats on a job well done.

I didn't think of putting a drawer in there...that is a good idea.
