Hi Folks,

Have a question your way. A friend brought over some chairs that are coming apart. Here is what I know about them:

- They are from the early 1900's
- Looks like M&T construction using dowels as floating tenons

It looks like a combination of things is going on. The glue joints are failing on most spots. There are some places where the wood is cracking around the joint indicating that some glue is sticking.

Questions:
- Any thoughts on how to repair these chairs?
- Is there any chance they used hide glue on the chairs?

Thanks!

Quality chairs in that time frame used hide glue. Easiest way that I know of to determine the presence of said glue is to open a joint to check for an amber coloration of glue within. Take a small screwdriver to probe glue, hide glue will flake / chip easily. Highly suggest that hide glue be used on repair for many reasons !!
