So when I'm not woodworking, hanging out with my wife and son, cooking or cleaning . . . I curl one a week. Those of you in or close to Canada probably know what curling is. If not, you may have heard of it from the Winter Olympics.

Anyway, my wife and I both curl and we got a few friends together to teach them how. We had our friend actually teach them. She's among the top women curlers in the U.S. In fact she lost out last year in the gold medal game of the US Nationals, which would have sent her to the Olympics this year.

So we got the couples together and had a small guys against girls match. Just to be silly I made these trophies for the winning team:

They're made out of some scrap maple, lacewood/snakewood, and tiger wood. For reference, they're only about 6 or 7 inches high.

BTW, I learned that I do need to seal the wood before I use my rubber signature stamp. I didn't on the maple and the stamp bled a little bit. I'll be sure to stamp after sealing from now on.

And here some of us were having a good time last night!

I used to make fun of curling before I tried it. It's hard and can be a great work out. But I like it because it's a great winter sport that doesn't rely on the weather.

Anyway . . .

Nice job on the trophies! 8) I'm sure the winners will treasure them for a week or two anyway. :D Are they traveling trophies or does the winner put them on the mantle forever?
I have heard of curling from the olimpics mainly but, never tried it. Looks like bowling only quieter. :D

Thanks. They'll stay on a mantle forever. Or end up in a trash can. :D My scam was that since it was guys against girls, and all couples . . . each couple would have ended up with a trophy no matter who won. (The men killed them by the way :-D )

It is kind of like bowling. I call it a mix of chess, bowling, shuffleboard, boccie ball, and golf. I like it since to me it resembles golf. That and you can bring your drink on the ice and it stays cold the entire match!

I used to play curling every so often when I lived back in Canada. Quite a challenging game. Just don't step on the ice with your slider foot!

Have fun! I'm no longer active over there, but a bunch of my friends are there still.

I'll have to stop in at the club and get a photo of the gorilla, just for old time's sake.

Great work on the trophies! I almost did some curling myselft this weekend. I spent most of Saturday breaking up an ice patch in front of the house. I then spent most of Sunday recuperating. Thank God for Motrin.
