Well, after some thinking I decided to follow LOML's advice and make the box for the litho as simple as possible so I can replicate it quickly if the need arises (there are already a couple of guys at work interested)
The box is very simple-- a mahogany top and back held together with a wooden block glued and nailed from/to the top/back from the inside.
I used a core box bit to create two grooves for the sides of the corian to sit in and then fixed it in place with epoxy. I lined the top and back of the inside with HVAC tape as it reflects the light and reduces hotspots from the LEDs.
The light mechanism is a 5-led battery operated light which operates by pushing on the light. I put a small piece of velcro on the button and then attached a 1/4 dowel with another piece of velcro. The dowel goes about 1/2 way through a hole drilled into the top and into the other side I put a button made of ebony I turned on the lathe.
I ended up re-flattening the corian and then re-bending it on a tighter curve (coffee can)
Vicki, you asked if curving it screws up the proportions-- it doesn't actually... and I have no idea why. When viewed from the side you arn't able to see the whole thing and it's true that that is distracting, but when viewed from the front it looks quite "3d" and in proportion
I plan to put a bottom on eventually- but that is really just a nicety as it is not really needed. My next box will be cleaner on the inside as well-- I now know that this prototype works anbd will take my time a bit more next time (the box is functional, but the inside is not as cleanly executed as I'd like- especially with regard to the silver tape and epoxy.
There's also a youtube video that I uploaded here - HD is available
