I ran into a nice couple yesterday at HF, who had some questions about turning tools. I just happened by as they were asking and as usual, the people that work there don't know much about the tools. So I asked them what they were turning. ALABASTER. My jaw almost hit the floor. Turning stone with wood tools? Come to find out, there's an alabaster supply company up in Ft. Collons, just North of here, and they have their own quarry up in the foot hills of the rockies. So, that got me thinking that I may give it a shot myself. I'll let you know how it goes, when I get the time to try it.

Here's the link to the web site if anyone else is intrested:

Very interesting, keep us posted.
I have had some experience with drilling small river rocks for a fountain.
Some are too hard to cut with a diamond core drill. let us know how hard is Alabaster?

sounds like this would cry out for carbide tipped tools... but who knows how abrasive the stuff is, maybe it is softer than mesquite...

Good point on the resperator, and due to problems already experienced with turning Bocoti, I don't turn on the lathe without both the DC and my Air Shield on.

Like I said, with my schedule, I doubt I'll be doing this any time soon, but it's nice to have a source of supply so close.
