Have a few sections of black walnut logs about 6 to 10 inches across, this wood was recently cut & end sealed. What is the rule with handling the pith? Should this wood be split along the pith to then end up with bowl blanks? Any suggestions appreciated

Knot,

If the logs are already cut to length and sealed you should divide them to remove the pith.

I slice the log billets lengthwise about 1/2" left and right of the pith. That is two cuts. I find it helps keep the blank from checking.

Even doing that you have only a fairly short (1-2 months) before you should turn the blanks.

Good luck,

If you don't want it in the final piece with the drying risks that entails, chainsaw it up the middle now. Chalk the place just above center on the far end, cut directly down through the billet, watching the near end. http://www.customwooddesign.com/turninggreenwood-1.html et al.

At 6 to 10" there's not much wood to give away, so taking a slab out of the middle makes little sense. If it's branch wood, you're in for some strange drying directions anyway.

Get your bark up stuff cut SOON, so the sapwood doesn't discolor on you.

Here's a visual of the cut needed.
